Leading designs and manufacturer, InSinkErator, is renowned for its selection of innovative food waste disposals systems; but other than making a slight whirring noise and forcing food to disappear, many homeowners and designers alike are unsure of the technicalities behind this design.
Many fall into the assumption that an InSinkErator disposer works akin to a blender, with spinning blades swiftly chopping and breaking down the food waste and propelling it downwards. However, disposers in fact work in a different way – without the use of blades and combining scientific principles with intelligent mechanical design.
Impellers or lugs are mounted on to a spinning plate, which uses the principle of centrifugal force to continuously push food waste particles against a stationary grind ring that clads the circumference of the interior.
The grinding ring breaks down the food waste into very fine particles – transforming them into a near-liquid form. After the particles have been finely ground, the running water from the kitchen mixer tap flushes the particles through the ring, out of the InSinkErator disposer and into the waste water pipe.
