Donald Trump recently asked the Guggenheim Museum if he could borrow Van Gogh’s ‘Landscape With Snow’ artwork, depicting a man and a dog walking through a field.
Guggenheim’s Chief Curator, Nancy Spector, quickly turned down the request. Instead, she said the White House could loan an 18-carat gold toilet – an installation by artist Maurizio Cattelan.
The fully functioning toilet was installed in the Guggenheim in September 2016, whereupon tens of thousands of Americans consecutively defecated into it. Nancy Spector saw that this as a fitting gift for the American President.
Spector’s emailed reply to Trump said that the golden toilet was available, “should the President and First Lady have any interest in installing it in the White House”.
Artist, Maurizio Cattelan, “would like to offer it to the White House for a long-term loan,” Spector said in the email. She added: “It is, of course, extremely valuable and somewhat fragile, but we would provide all the instructions for its installation and care.”Guggenheim | guggenheim.org
