Judge, jury and exhibitor – the panel for Roca’s One Day Design Challenge are announced

Roca’s One Day Design Challenge is taking place this year at the Roca London Gallery on 17th June. The competition is aimed at students and young professionals aged 18 – 29, in the aim to promote the work of budding designers and showcase the talents of the up-and-coming name within the industry.

The company have just announced the expert panel – a combination of acclaimed architects and design practitioners – who shall carefully judge the entries on their creativity, originality and viability, alongside the clarity and graphic design of the showcase presentations to decide the recipients of the £1,000, £650 and £350 prizes.

Roca introduces the judges…

Director of Zaha Hadid Design, Maha Kutay

“Kutay first joined ZHA in 1995 and returned to the practice in 2007 to help set up the design business under Zaha Hadid Design. She has been involved in a number of landmark product assignments and contributed to key competitions and built work. Kutay has a BA degree in Environmental Design from Parsons School of Design, New York, and a Master’s degree in Architecture from Columbia University, New York. She was awarded the Lucille Lowenfish Memorial Prize in Design (1994).”


Principal and Director of Sam Jacob Studio, Sam Jacob (Featured Image)

“Sam Jacob is principal of Sam Jacob Studio for architecture and design, a practice whose work spans scales and disciplines from urban design through architecture, design, art and curatorial projects. He has worked internationally on award winning projects and has exhibited at major museums such as the V&A, MAK, and The Art Institute of Chicago as well as cultural events including the Venice Architecture Biennale. He is Professor of Architecture at UIC, Chicago, visiting professor at Yale School of Architecture, Director of Night School at the Architectural Association and columnist for Art Review and Dezeen. Previously he was a founding director of FAT Architecture.”


Risa Sano and Yasuyuki Sakurai, Mentsen Design Studio

“Mentsen is a London-based design practice established in 2011 and a partnership between two designers, Yasuyuki Sakurai and Risa Sano. The studio name, meaning ‘lines and surfaces’ in Japanese, references to the studio’s combined specialty in product design and visual communication. Working internationally, Mentsen develop visual concepts and offer product design and art direction for businesses and cultural organisations.”


Xavier Torras, Roca

“Brand Communications Director of Roca and Director of the We Are Water Foundation since its creation in 2010. Torras has developed his professional career in the fields of marketing, business strategy and communication.”
