Patricia Urquiola tells us how her new bathroom collection gets the best out of ceramic materials

The SONAR collection is the latest range from Swiss bathroom manufacturer Laufen. Designed by eclectic designer Patricia Urquiola, the collection of basins and bathtub is the latest incarnation of the company’s SaphirKeramik material.

Having designed the Laufen showroom in Madrid, the renowned Spanish designer is the brand’s latest design collaborator following on from creations in association with Konstantin Gcric as well as the joint project with Kartell and designers Ludovica+Roberto Palomba. The SONAR range includes wall-hung washbasins, washbasin bowls and a bathtub.

Laufen launched SaphirKeramik in 2013, a high-tech ceramic material with new performance properties which allow for the creation of wafer-thin but still exceptionally robust walls, finely-defined curves and tight-edge radii of just 1 to 2mm. Now the third generation of products in the material sees Urquiola interpreting and exploiting its characteristics in terms of decor as well as form and function.

The traditionally smooth and continuous outer surfaces of washstands and bathtubs now take on a three-dimensional aspect, while conserving the slender lines.

The range aims to combine contrast, balance, and elegance, to create products with an architectural minimalism but which also convey the energy and movement associated with the natural phenomenon of sound waves and the way they interact with water. Inclined planes, material cuts, and small internal overhangs are all functional ploys to optimize the ow of water and to resolve logistical aspects with creative ingenuity and style.

Urquiola said: “For me Laufen means many themes: innovation; choice; research on the nest materials and respect for design aimed at always achieving maximum quality.”

The range was first unveiled last year at ISH in Frankfurt, with a selection of five washbasins and one bathtub. Laufen’s Director of Marketing & Products Marc Viardot said at the time: “The material is so new, we need to explore different angles, and after our collaboration with Kartell and then Konstantin
cric, Patricia Urquiola offers us a completely different approach. We are very happy to collaborate with her.”
