Ted Baker and British Ceramic Tile show us how to rock the rustic look

Traditional encaustic tiles are known for their unique creative process and use of materials. Instead of focussing on an ordinary palette of paints and finishes, encaustic art employs melted wax – heated beeswax in ancestral times – which is blended with coloured pigments and artistically spread across the canvas to create interesting original designs with a unique wax finish.

Nowadays we’re seeing a resurgence of the popularity of encaustic art, with encaustic tiles, in particular, is known for their charming rustic quality, that makes for a perfect addition to a rough-luxe scheme. British Ceramic Tile, in collaboration with Ted Baker, have created a collection of timelessly charming tiles that take inspiration from the elegant encaustic designs of yesteryear, while giving you a rock-star-worthy rustic edge that will look great anywhere in your contemporary kitchen.

The perfectly imperfect encaustic look can present everything from Moroccan-inspired motifs to contemporary geometric patterns in a whole new light. Partridge, from the Ted Baker collection at British Ceramic Tile, offers four subtle designs, each following a classic rococo pattern with a textured ceramic finish and an authentic handmade feel. The encaustic-effect adds a vintage quality to the decadent motifs, while the optional colour schemes – which focus on a predominately grey palette – ensure that the tiles maintain a modern feel that can work on the walls, or make for a truly striking statement floor.

British Ceramic Tile’s head of design, Claire O’Brien explained: “Encaustic tiles have been the adorning the walls and floors of homes in Europe and Morocco for centuries. Modern encaustics cover the full design spectrum marrying historical influences with contemporary shapes and forms. Opt for a more understated floor with a muted grey tile featuring a classic rococo pattern or throw caution to the wind with vivid shades of white and Aegean blue in a bold geometric design.

The key to success when creating a design that’s personal to you and your home is making the tile the star of the room. Let it talk for itself. Start with your floor or feature wall, using space, light and furniture cleverly to showcase the tile to its true potential.”

The Ted Baker Partridge tile is available in a 33x33cm size and can work wonderfully with Ted’s two plain concrete-effect tiles, that are available in two subtle grey shades.
