Hafele’s top tips on how to minimise waste in the kitchen this Christmas season

The festive period is a time when cupboards and fridges are full to the brim as we stock up for a period of delicious indulgence. Inevitably, some of these goodies won’t get eaten before their use-by date, victims of the holiday whirlwind of activity which results in best-intention recipe plans or meal ideas being laid to waste.

In fact, our recent survey found that food wastage is not simply a seasonal concern. Almost half (48%) of British people waste up to £10 of food per month, and 1 in 6 of us (16%) up to £20.

So, what better time than Christmas to address this issue? You’ve treated yourself and the family to some mouth-watering morsels – let’s make sure they get eaten

Packed pantries and crammed cupboards can lead to items being forgotten as they get pushed to the back of the shelf. Suddenly, you get a craving for a warm mince pie, only to find that the buttery, fruity delights are three days past their best. Bah, humbug!

Getting into the swing of things

But, like a Christmas Carol, this is a tale with a happy ending. Kitchen experts have taken kitchen storage to the next level, re-thinking cupboards with pull-out or swing-out shelving that enables the full contents of the cupboard to be seen. That cranberry sauce will be impossible to forget when it’s staring at you every time you open the cupboard door.

Fresh and festive

Useful drawer storage, in the form of bread or vegetable baskets, can also help to keep everything organised, allowing you to use up produce while it is still fresh and at its festive peak.

Christmas is a time of foodie excess – and rightly so! But that does not mean that it should also be a season of waste. Getting into good habits over the holidays can lead to less wastage throughout the year – and more pounds in your pocket. Eat, drink and be merry!

Waste organisation

Give the gift of organisation done for you this Christmas: Let’s face it, doing the bins isn’t anyone’s favourite job, is it? And whilst we all want to do as much as we can to be as environmentally friendly as possible, sometimes it’s the waste sorting that can be the least pleasurable part. Imagine if somebody told you that this Christmas you could receive a gift that would do the sorting for you – sound too good to be true? Think again!

The Ninka One2Five Waste Bin System does just that – keeping all of your waste and recycling separated and ultra-organised. The unique innovation can also be kept out of sight behind a single cupboard door so that you can keep your waste out of sight and out of mind (until bin day), knowing that the organisation is being done for you.
