Move over greenery. There’s a new kid in town. And it’s not for shrinking violets!

Last year, the refreshing and revitalising shade, Greenery, ruled the colour roost. But Pantone’s Colour of the Year is now the dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade, Ultra Violet.

In Pantone’s own words, the blue-based purple communicates “originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking that points us towards the future”. Impressive characteristics indeed. In layman’s terms, think purple, think Prince or Jimi Hendrix – enigmatic purples have long been symbolic of unconventionality and artistic brilliance.

Ultra violet is as impressive and commanding as its new status in the world of colour palettes, where Pantone’s announcement heralded an excited flurry of activity among designers involving all things, all shades of purple – from bold, bright baths to vibrant floors to dazzling ovens.

In a shade drawn from nature with deep, warm tones that elicit a real sense of indulgence, the lilac hued, moorland-inspired Heath tile from the Winchester Tile Company’s Residence collection is brilliantly versatile with a spirt of avant-garde. Shown here teamed with a gold glitter grout against a purple backdrop, giving an opulent twist.

Dave Mayer, Sales and Marketing Director of kitchen sink manufacturer, Reginox, says, “When Pantone reveals its annual colour of the year prediction, designers across all industries take note, so purple has become big news over the last few months. Homeowners are increasingly experimenting with shades of purple throughout the home, often using it as a bold accent colour on an occasional chair, or accessorising with cushions and wall art.”
