New Designers this year celebrates its 30th edition. Testament to the passion, commitment and resilience of art and design education in the UK, New Designers offers a showcase for new generations of talented individuals for businesses and the design savvy public to discover.
The event provokes fresh thinking, kick-starts careers and helps to ensure that the life cycle of the country’s design industry continues to thrive.
The event will again welcome over 3,000 of this year’s most creative and talented design graduates from across the UK to London’s Business Design Centre. Taking place over two weeks, the exhibition is divided into two parts covering a host of creative disciplines. Part 1 (24-27 June) covers textiles & fashion, costume design, jewellery and ceramics while Part 2 (1-4 July) encompasses furniture, product & industrial design, spatial design, graphic design and illustration.
An integral part of New Designers is One Year On, which specifically showcases a group of over 50 emerging designers in their first year of business, selected for their entrepreneurial flair and exceptional quality of work.
This year One Year On welcomes jewellery designer and photographer Rheanna Lingham as its new curator. Lingham is co-founder of Shoreditch-based boutique Luna and Curious, which highlights what she and her co-founders consider the core principles of making; honouring great craftsmanship, insightful design and endeavouring to support British manufacture.
New Designers also features the coveted New Designers Awards, presented to the most innovative graduates in partnership with leading brands and organisations. These Awards recognise the design world’s rising stars, offering winners and runners-up vital support as they embark on professional careers.
A significant number of people have had their introduction into the commercial world through New Designers, many of whom have gone on to do great things within businesses across the globe, or indeed have become names in their own right – including Thomas Heatherwick, Bethan Gray and Deadgood. To celebrate 30 years of success, New Designers is inviting its Alumni to get in touch on Twitter by using #ND30yrs to share what the show means to them and where they are now.
